An international group of scientists has come up with a proposal to reduce methane emissions and dioxide carbon. The proposal was made by more than a dozen scientists, including experts from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and various universities. The team said its plan would prevent millions of deaths caused annually by air pollution and help improve the productivity of some crops.

So far, the efforts of the international community have focused on reducing atmospheric levels of man-made dioxide carbon. It takes decades to leave the atmosphere, creating a layer that captures the heat and causes the planet's temperature to rise. That's why the team led by Drew Shindell, a climatologist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and an ozone expert, focused on other elements that contribute to air pollution such as methane and black carbon.

Methane, one of the components of natural gas, is a gaseous hydrocarbon produced by the decomposition of organic substances and combined with monoxide carbon that generates tropospheric ozone, which is toxic to human health.

Black carbon is the material produced by the incomplete combustion of petroleum products. The authors made a preliminary analysis with approximately two thousand measures of pollution control and used a computer model to select the most effective, both to mitigate the warming and to improve air quality. 

They finally made a selection among the biggest benefits they provided and found that half were related to methane emissions and the other half to black carbon. According to their results, introducing actions such as the use of filters in vehicles, banning the burning of agricultural wastes or improving cooking stove technology would reduce the global warming average by about 0.5 degrees Celsius by 2050. These measures added To carbon dioxide reduction would limit global warming to less than two degrees Celsius over the next 60 years.
