GET TO KNOW! What Does a Paramedic Do?
Paramedics
are an essential part of rescue teams.
During emergencies, we always think of the white-robed
doctors at the hospitals as the ones that save the patients. This is not wrong,
but were you aware of the fact that paramedics are the first ones to save lives?
During an emergency,
the first order of priority is patient
stabilization, which will allow for their transport to the proper medical
institutions. It is the paramedic’s
job to tend to the patients during this less-than-ideal
conditions, without the advantages of an operating room, or a hospital
gurney.
Paramedics are prepared medical professionals
who serve several functions; it is
also a job that requires courage and the ability to remain cool under extremely
dangerous situations. Some of their responsibilities include:
- Checking on a patient’s health and offer any necessary treatment.
- Quickly and safely moving the patient to the nearest medical assistance center.
- Depending on the situation, stabilizing and treating the patient in situ before moving them, to ensure their survival.
Paramedics are one of the base blocks of rescue teams, always working alongside police and rescue forces such as firefighters and volunteer teams. Paramedics
have a vast amount of medical knowledge
and treatment training, as they can
never know what situation they will face next.
They have been trained to
administer oxygen, stitch wounds, resuscitate, read medical charts and administer medicine orally and
intravenously, depending on the situation.
All rescue
teams must count with properly trained paramedics,
as accidents come in all forms and patients may need any number of medical and
professional treatment.
